Our history is the pinnacle of American history and yet, it has been limited in our classrooms, infringed upon by the government and appropriated by cultures who never fully grasp the reason and the message in the praise of our heroes. We will never forget the struggle of our ancestors; how could we?! It is the catalyst for our success. We use their journey to further our own. We use their triumphs to motivate our children. We use their stories to navigate the beaten pathways; We cannot fail even if we tried. We are built for victory. We will win!

Courtney Napier will be leading the conversation: “From Great to Good: Shedding the ‘Shoulds’ and Unlocking Your Unique Excellence.” 🌟

Courtney Napier, a phenomenal mother, partner, griot, and creativity coach hailing from North Carolina (by way of California), brings a wealth of experience. Starting her career as a journalist, she has evolved into the CEO of BOS Media & Consulting, founder of Black Oak Society, LLC Society, and Publisher/Editor-In-Chief of BOS Magazine.

Since 2019, Courtney has contributed to national publications like The Appeal and Newsone, as well as local outlets including The Carolinian, WALTER Magazine, and Scalawag Magazine.

Through BOS Media, Courtney works with businesses and nonprofits, helping them create creative and inclusive solutions to policies and messaging. Simply put, her mission as a griot, creative, and coach is to empower people to use their creative voice in service of collective liberation.

On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at 2:00 pm, We are partnering with the City of Raleigh and NC State's School of Humanities and Social Sciences to host a listening session to learn more about the alternative response program. We are happy to see the city taking action on implementing the community engagement measures outlined in our proposal. The responsibility lies with us, the people, to organize and ensure the creation of community safety programs that are independent of the police. I Am An Ancestor Too

How might we approach zines as liberatory texts?

It’s a question we’ll be musing during my workshop at @assatasmagic ‘s exhibition. 🎨 Assata is hosting an afternoon Arts & Activism workshop series in association with their upcoming exhibition, “I am an ancestor too”!

During the event, I’ll be teaching an hour long workshop about what it means for zines to be used as liberatory texts and how we can use them to narrate our own stories. We will:

🍀 Review the History of Zines

🐛Discuss liberation and what being an ancestor looks like for us

🦋 And create zines inspired by our discussion

I’ve been passionate about zines and the power of self publishing for a long time so I’m super excited to share my research (and my collection 😉) with you guys.
